Lesson 29

Exfoliate – to remove dead skin cells or the outer layer of something by rubbing or peeling.

Example Sentence: I exfoliate my face twice a week to keep my skin smooth and healthy.

Irrevocable – unable to be changed, reversed, or cancelled.

Example Sentence: Once the contract was signed, the decision became irrevocable.

Cloying – excessively sweet, sentimental, or pleasant to the point of being unpleasant.

Example Sentence: The dessert was so cloying that I couldn’t finish it.

Supervene – to happen afterwards as a result of something else; to occur unexpectedly.

Example Sentence: A sudden storm supervened and forced the hikers to turn back.

Jostle – to push, bump, or elbow roughly while moving through a crowd.

Example Sentence: Passengers jostled each other as they hurried to board the train.

Marginal – of little importance; existing at the edge or border; barely sufficient.

Example Sentence: The company made only a marginal profit this year.

Wisp – a thin, light strand or small amount of something.

Example Sentence: A wisp of smoke drifted up from the campfire.

Harmonise – to bring into agreement or create a pleasing combination.

Example Sentence: The choir members harmonised beautifully during the performance.

Anew – again; in a new or different way.

Example Sentence: After moving to a new city, she decided to start her life anew.

Deprive – to prevent someone from having or enjoying something they need or want.

Example Sentence: Lack of sleep can deprive you of the energy needed to focus.
