Lesson 28

Eavesdrop – To secretly listen to other people’s conversations without their knowledge.

Example Sentence: I accidentally eavesdropped on a conversation about the surprise party.

Loathsome – Extremely unpleasant, disgusting, or hateful.

Example Sentence: The villain’s loathsome behaviour made everyone avoid him.

Pushy – Excessively forceful or demanding in trying to get what one wants.

Example Sentence: The salesperson was so pushy that I decided not to buy anything.

Coerce – To force or pressure someone into doing something against their will.

Example Sentence: No one should be coerced into making a decision they are uncomfortable with.

Propel – To drive, push, or move something forward.

Example Sentence: Strong winds propelled the sailboat across the lake.

Turbulence – Violent or unsteady movement, especially in air or water; a state of disorder.

Example Sentence: The plane encountered turbulence during the storm.

Wringing – Twisting or squeezing something tightly; often used in the phrase “wringing one’s hands” to show anxiety.

Example Sentence: She sat in the waiting room, wringing her hands with worry.

Mire – A difficult situation from which it is hard to escape; also, soft muddy ground.

Example Sentence: The company found itself in a financial mire after years of poor management.

Aspersion – A damaging or false remark that attacks someone’s reputation.

Example Sentence: He took offence at the aspersions cast on his integrity.

Oesophagus – The tube that carries food and liquids from the mouth to the stomach.

Example Sentence: Food travels down the oesophagus before reaching the stomach.
