Yoga Day to be celebrated on grand scale in Goa


To commemorate the 5th International Day of Yoga (IDY) on June 21, the Directorate of Health Services will hold yoga celebrations on a mass scale at state level as well as at all health centres in Goa.

A state level function will be held at Taleigao Community Hall, Taleigao on June 21 at 7 a.m. in association with Directorate of Sports & Youth Affairs and Directorate of Education. About 500 participants including school students, nursing school, Disha School for Special Children, government staff and the general public will be participating and practicing Common Yoga Protocol.

Similarly, yoga day functions will be organised at taluka levels in Panaji, Mapusa, Ponda, Vasco, Margao, Quepem, Pernem, Bicholim, Sattari, Mormugoa, Canacona and Dharbandora under Primary Health Centres (PHCs), Community Health Centres (CHCs) and UHCs.

Other CHCs and PHCs will also be organising yoga demonstrations/lectures etc in their respective jurisdiction with the help of yoga experts for students, anganwadi workers, Panchayat level, Block level NGO, general public, staff, etc.

Addressing a press conference on Wednesday in Panaji, Urban Development Minister and yoga day state coordinator, Milind Naik said: “In order to increase awareness, we have involved the general public as well this time. The importance of yoga should reach youngsters and adults as they need to take care of their health. Yoga is something that anyone can do, because it doesn’t involve much expense, and only requires a mat. Also yoga benefits people not just physically but mentally too.”

He adds that government departments like police, forest, fire, FDA will be performing yoga at their own HQs and offices. Naik further said that if a group of 50 and above in any society or group wants to do yoga on yoga day, they will be given a trainer if they contact the organiser. “Government servants will be given about one hour relaxation, if they go outside their respective offices to perform yoga on June 21,” he added.

Competitions on yoga will also be organised with Akhil Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) and other organisations at Kala Mandir, Ponda for students. Yoga organisations like Goa State Yoga Academy, Patanjali Yog Samiti, Art of Living and others are associated with this event. As per guidelines of Ministry of AYUSH, Government of India, all government departments, schools, higher secondary schools, colleges, GMC, DFDA, nursing school, NGOs etc will celebrate International Yoga Day (IDY) with functions at their premises. AYUSH Cell DHS has provided trained yoga instructors to the institutions for the demonstration of Common Yoga Protocol.

After completion of the IDY event, the photographs will be uploaded on the web portal.
