Wooden boat ‘partially’ damaged in fire at Siolim

Mapusa: A cruise boat made up of wood, which was under repairs at Gudem, Siolim, was partially burnt, following the breakout of fire there.

According to the Mapusa fire station, on Sunday afternoon, around 1.55 pm a call was received about the breakout of fire at Gudem, Siolim, where the cruise boat was being  repaired.

Accordingly, a team led by a leading firefighter Suraj Shetgaonkar, which included  Girish Gawas, Govind Gawas, Ashok Volvoikar and Santosh Tanodi rushed to the spot, and undertook fire extinguishing.

A plastic sheet used for covering the boat went up in flames and the body the wooden boat was partial damaged in the fire.

Fire personnel brought the fire under control and prevented it from spreading further, or else, a fibre boat,  which was placed next to the wooden boat, would have gutted.

According to a fire station official, a loss of Rs 50,000 was reported. A major portion of the wooden boat was saved from getting damaged, he added.

The fire personnel saved property worth Rs 10 lakh. The wooden boat is owned by Paul Charles, said the fire department official, adding the cause of fire is not known.
