Panaji: Health Minister Vishwajit Rane on Wednesday said that he will consider the request made by Benaulim MLA Churchill Alemao for the re-appointment of Iva Fernandes as the South Goa designated officer of Food and Drugs Administration (FDA).
A year after Fernandes ‘confirmed’ the presence of ‘formalin’ a cancer-causing agent, in the fish imported from the neighbouring states, she has been relieved by the health department of her responsibilities without citing any reason.
Learning the same through the newspapers, Alemao approached the Chief Minister Pramod Sawant and Rane with a request to re-appoint the lady officer and to hand over the food safety administration of the South Goa District.
“I will see what is to be done; Churchill has a right to make such request as she (Fernandes) is a voter from his constituency so I will take a call accordingly. But one thing is certain whatever she had done were not done as per the law and the norms. The inquiry report is also there in the file,” said Rane while interacting with media persons in the state assembly.
Earlier in the day, Alemao said that the Chief Minister has assured him to consider his request hence he didn’t move a calling attention motion on the issue. He expressed confidence that the promise made to him will be fulfilled by the government.
In an order dated July 17, 2019, issued by Secretary Health J Ashok Kumar, the department has appointed North Goa designated officer of FDA Richard Noronha and given him the charge of the food safety administration of both North Goa and South Goa districts with immediate effect.
