Vedanta Ltd., bagged the top prize in sports development category at the ET Now CSR Leadership Awards, organised by World CSR Day. The award is for the company’s initiatives in developing grassroots football.
Towards sports development, the company runs the Sesa Football Academy that provides youngsters with football training. The academy runs two residential programmes training 70 boys who are from various parts of India. The academy also trains over 250 kids on a non- residential basis. The community outreach programme with Vedanta Football Schools cover over 500 kids in 16 villages in Goa.
The other initiative, Vedanta Limited – Zinc Football, promotes grassroots football at 64 community football centres in Rajasthan. At the heart of the initiative is a residential academy at Zawar, near Udaipur, with world-class facilities. The academy is currently training its first batch of 30 children, all of whom are under 14.
According to Vedanta, initiatives in football produced nine players who have played in the national team apart from many others in the Indian Super League and I-League. Annanya Agarwal, president, Vedanta Football Project, said, “We are really proud of this achievement. Recognitions such as these motivate and inspire us to work harder to achieve the goal of holistic development of the local youth through football. We will keep the spirit of football alive in India and keep nurturing players at the grass root level.”
