Panaji: Directorate of Tribal Welfare in association with United Tribal Association Alliance (UTAA) observed ‘Prerana Din’ in memory of late Mangesh Gaonkar and late Dilip Velip on Saturday at Ravindra Bhavan, Curchorem.
Minister for Power and Curchorem MLA Nilesh Cabral was the guest of honour while Minister for Tribal Welfare Govind Gaude presided over the function.
To mark the occasion, ‘Adiwasi Pradnyawant Puraskars’ were given to tribal people in honor of their contribution in the field of education, sports, agriculture and art and culture.
The awardees included Ravindra Gaonkar, Molem-Dharbandora (Education); Jayanti Mayenkar, Marcel (sports); Dattaram Jalmi, Keri, Ponda (agriculture) and Amelia Dias, Quepem (art and culture).
Speaking on the occasion, Cabral assured government’s support to uplift the welfare of the tribal community of the State.
Gaude urged the people of tribal community not to depend totally on reservation system in this competitive world. Everyone should struggle and stand on one’s own feet he said and further opined that reservation cannot be the solution for alleviating the tribal community. Secretary, Tribal Welfare, Daulat Hawaldar stressing the relevance of education in today’s world underscored the importance on self-employment as it is very difficult to create jobs in public and Government sector.
