Traditional women fish vendors from Vasco have initiated a drive to stop non-Goan fish vendors from selling fish to locals in the
jurisdiction of Mormugao Municipality. Some traditional vendors from the area are visiting each and every ward of the Mormugao Municipal Council (MMC) and are stopping non-Goan fish vendors from selling fish to locals.
Following a clash between some non-Goan vendors and traditional vendors around a week ago near the new fish market premises in Vasco, many non-Goan fish vendors have stopped selling fish to locals.
However, some non-Goan fish vendors said that nobody can stop them from selling fish.
A vendor said that selling fish is their fundamental and
constitutional right and they will fight for it. She said that they will hold a meeting of non-Goan fish vendors and decide action against “harassment” caused by the traditional fish vendors from Vasco.
Another non-Goan fish vendor said that traditional fish vendors do not have any right to take action against them as it is the duty of the civic body and the police to initiate action.
