Panaji: Bhiva Parab and Nirgosh Gaude, the two reporters of ‘The Navhind Times,’ on Friday, were conferred upon awards for ‘excellence in journalism.’
The two received the awards at the hands of the Chief Minister Pramod Sawant at a function held by the Goa Union of Journalists on the occasion of World Freedom of Press Day, in Panaji.
Parab received two awards ‘Late Felicio Cardozo Award for Environmental Journalism’ for the year 2012-13 for the story ‘Fertile land takes a beating due to Illegal sand mining,’ and ‘Felicio Cardozo Award for Environmental Journalism’ for the year 2016-17 for the story ‘The fate of Sonshi.’ Nirgosh received ‘Suresh Walve Award for Rural Journalism.’
The Chief Minister graced the event as the guest of honour while the Leader of Opposition Chandrakant Kavlekar was the guest of honour.
Advocate Cleofato Almeida Coutinho, an eminent counsellor and political commentator, was the keynote speaker on the occasion.
Speaking on the occasion,
the Chief Minister said that Goa has freedom of press, and the Chief Minister’s office is open for journalists for seeking information and Goa has maintained freedom of press and will maintain freedom of press in the future also.
The GUJ awards for the years 2012 to 2018 were declared recently. World Press Freedom Day was proclaimed by the UN General Assembly in December 1993, following the recommendation of UNESCO’s General Conference.
Since then, May 3, is celebrated worldwide as World Press Freedom Day. This year’s theme, ‘Media for Democracy: Journalism and Elections in Times of Disinformation’ discusses current challenges faced by the media in elections, along with the media’s potential in supporting peace and reconciliation processes and is especially relevant in today’s India.
