AUDIO REVIEW JP Pereira
‘The Candle Still Burns’ is a film that is going to be made on the life of Goa’s patron saint Francis Xavier, by Agnelo Fernandes. He is the writer and director of the previously released award-winning film ‘Panvlam’, based on the life of St Joseph Vaz. This audio disc features 13 songs from the forthcoming film.
The album begins with ‘Sobit Sounsar’, an ode to God’s beautiful creation and is renderd by Shunaina Baptista with Agnelo de Dabolim. This is followed by ‘Nach Nach’, by Elaine Pinto with Anthony San, recounting the misadventure of a young Francis in Spain while his quest for fame is told on ‘Vhoddponn Zai’ by Ivan Gonsalves. Fr Jean DCruz with Tereza and Shunaina renders ‘Kiteak Bodollo’, the change that comes over Francis after he hears the words of Ignatius de Loyola.
‘Amchea Bapa’, ‘Unddo Vanttcho’, ‘Sobit Dev’ narrate the teachings of Lord Jesus preached wholeheartedly by the saint. These are rendered by Fr Loyola Pereira with other singers. Rutuja Lotlikar and Tejas Onskar sing the nice ‘Jezucho Pattlau’ and the five year olds: Josepha, Jenisia, and Blesida effortlessly sing for Jesus on ‘Jezu Amcho Khoro Ixtt’. ‘Yesu Ke Pas’ is a trilingual (Hindi, Tamil and Malayalam) by Rutuja, Tejas, Sr Jimcy and Sr Sheeba(beautiful voice). Emika Cota with Peter Fernandes sing the Japanese ‘Sienaru’, Shunaina joins Fr Peter on ‘Devan Mhonxeak Kiteak Roichla’ and the album ends with ‘The Candle’ sung by Vanessa, Shunaina, Fr Jean, and Fr Peter.
Each song is introduced to the audience by Selma Afonso and Carmelina Vaz. The album has lyrics by Agnelo Fernandes set to pleasant original tunes by Fr Peter Cardozo, playing the keyboard. Produced by Amelia Rodrigues the songs are quite enjoyable and make for good listening. This is not music of the time when the saint was on his mission, this is modern music and songs.
