As part of the weekly MOG Sunday programme, founder of Dastkari Haat Samiti, Jaya Jaitly will give a talk on ‘The Future of Handicrafts’, on July 7, 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at Museum of Goa, Pilerne.
The former president of Samata Party, Jaitly has been involved in promoting India’s crafts and textiles industries for over 40 years. She helped create Dilli Haat, one of the most prominent handicrafts markets in India. At MOG, she will talk about the future of handicrafts in India and Goa, how the crafts have evolved over time, and what the industry must do to remain relevant in the future. She has written books on craft traditions of India, and created an extensive documentation of the arts, crafts and textiles through artistic maps of Indian states, the ‘Crafts Atlas of India’. Her recent publication, ‘Crafting Indian Scripts’, combines literature, craft, and calligraphy.
Jaitly is currently working on a project bringing together crafts people from India, Pakistan, Vietnam, Thailand, Sri Lanka, and other South Asian countries, as well as Iran, Egypt, and other parts of Africa. Free and open for all.
