VASCO: Tension prevailed at Old Mardol at Verna on Thursday over the last rites of a 55-year-old man.
As per available information, some of the locals residing in Old Mardol area have objected to the final rites of a 55-year-old man by his family members at the hillock at Old Mardol in Verna. Tension prevailed at Old Mardol wherein locals raised their objection over performing of final rites in the vicinity of the residential area. As per information, some houses which are constructed at Old Mardol several decades ago and belonging to a certain community have been performing the final rites on a hillock behind Verna police station. However some of the locals who have constructed their houses recently objected to the cremation which lead to a dispute between the residents. In order to avoid any law and order situation, the joint Mamlatdar Salcete Ramesh Gaonkar immediately rushed to the site and tried to pacify the crowd.
A strong pose of police was deputed at Old Mardol, following the conflict between the two groups.
The cremation was held later in a peaceful manner in the presence of their community leaders.
