Taking Bhai’s vision forward


‘Manohar Parrikar Vidnyan Mahotsav’, a two day scientific event will be held on December 12 and 13, 2019.

Addressing media on Tuesday, Chief Minister Pramod Sawant said that late Parrikar had announced at the Nobel Prize series event held in 2018 that the series would be an annual feature in Goa and his government would support the same.

“Honouring this commitment, and taking his scientific vision forward, the Goa government has taken the decision to organise a two day scientific event to commemorate his birth anniversary on December 13, 2019 under the banner ‘Manohar Parrikar Vidnyan Mahotsav’,’’ he informed.

The event will be organised by the Department of Science and Technology.

Speaking further in the presence of the science and technology minister Michael Lobo; chairman, Goa Public Service Commission, Jose Noronha; and other officials, Sawant said that this will be annual event in the state.

The inaugural function of the Mahotsav will be held at National Institute of Oceanography, Dona Paula on December 12, 3:30 p.m. Lectures and interactive sessions by eminent scientists have been planned at different locations like NIO, Dona Paula; Ravindra Bhavan, Margao; Government College, Sanquelim; and Government College, Quepem.

The speakers for the event include former director general, Defence Research and Development Organisation, Padmabhushan and member of NITI Aayog, Vijai Kumar Saraswat; principal scientific adviser to the government of India, Padmashri K Vijay Raghavan; structural and computational biologist, Shekhar Mande; former chairman of the Indian Space Research Organisation, Padmashri A S Kiran Kumar; former secretary of ministry of earth sciences, Shailesh Nayak; chairman of Divecha Centre for Climate Change, Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore, J Srinivasan; professor R R Navalgund, professor S K Tandon; and former director of IIT Bombay, Ashok Misra.

Sawant further stated that during the inaugural session, two memorandum of understandings, one between the Goa government and the director general of Council for Scientific and Industrial Research and the other with the principal scientific advisor to the Government of India will be signed. This is aimed at stimulating an innovative and scientific thinking by bringing together eminent Indian and international scientists including Nobel Laureates so as offer exclusive opportunities for various stakeholders such as students, teachers, opinion makers, policy makers, researchers, scientists and general public, to interact and learn from these scientists.

The partner institutions will support the state government in identifying and inviting eminent scientists and Nobel Laureates and organising the annual event in future.
