Margao : The Margao municipal council is all set for a straight fight for the chairperson’s post on Friday.
Pooja Naik, who has been backed by the Goa Forward Party, is crossing swords with Doris Texeira, who has been backed by Margao legislator Digambar Kamat, for the post.
On Thursday, Texeira filed two sets of nomination papers before chief officer Siddhivinayak Naik on the last day of nomination.
She is one of the six councillors who have been backed by Margao legislator Digambar Kamat.
On Wednesday, Pooja Naik, a councillor backed by the Goa Forward Party, had filed her nomination papers for the chairperson’s post, which has been lying vacant since Babita Prabudesai resigned in the light of the controversy over the proposed statue for Opinion Poll leader Dr Jack de Sequeira.
There are 11 councillors who have been backed by the GFP.
In the 25-member MMC, the candidates vying for chairperson’s post must get the support of 13 councillors.
It must be noted here that six councillors supported by the BJP have not yet revealed their cards.
“We will reveal our strategy at the right time,” Ketan Kurtarkar, one of the councillors, said.
Both Naik and Texeira have claimed support of the majority of the councillors.
CCP commissioner Sanjit Rodrigues will be the presiding officer for the election.
The five-year term of the civic body had begun with the bonhomie between the councillors supported by Kamat and Vijay Sardesai-led GFP. The GFP-backed Prabhudesai had become the chairperson while Kamat-backed Texeira had become her deputy.
However, the results of the 2017 assembly elections changed political equations at the MMC. When the GFP extended its support to the then Parrikar government, Texeira was dropped and councillor Tito Cardozo succeeded her.
