St Anthony’s crowned champs



Scoring once in each half of play through Anselm D’Souza and Pusparaj Mandrekar, St Anthony’s SC, Siolim registered a hard fought and well deserved 2-1 win against host team – Chandor Club and emerge champions of 46th Chandor Seamen Rolling Trophy football tournament played at Chandor grounds on Sunday.

St Anthony’s SC, Siolim went into lead in the 8th minute following a forward through pass from the right flank to Anselm D’Souza who lurked in the rival box and no sooner did he receive the ball, he lost no time in slamming the ball to the far corner of Chandor Club’s nets to beat keeper Oswin Rodrigues.

Goaded by the early success, St Anthony’s SC, Siolim tightened the screws of their team in every department of the game, particularly in the defence, keeping a hawk’s eye against Chandor Club strikers who were left frustrated as every move they made in an attempt to find the mark was met with stiff resistance.

The second session too saw St Anthony’s SC, Siolim controlling the proceedings as they latched on to smart passes and positional play.

In the 46th minute of the second session, St Anthony’s SC, Siolim buttressed their lead when Puparaj Mandrekar sped down the left flank and after going past two rival defenders, bulged the nets with an angular effort to beat Chandor Club keeper Oswin Rodrigues.

Chandor Club’s Succor Fernandes and Benson Fernandes were seen working in tandem with each other and even as they did hoodwink the Siolim defence on two counts, the Siolim keeper Vinit Agarwadekar stood firm.

As the match was about to end, Chandor Club finally managed to pull a goal back through Vitorino Fernandes in the 65th minute and had to be content with the runner’s up slot.

Chief guest Joaquim Alemao, ex-minister, Government of Goa gave away the prizes in the presence of Yuri Alemao, social worker, Anthony Pango, GFA Vice President, Anthony Fernandes, GFA executive member and a host of other dignitaries.

The following won the individual prizes: Best goalkeeper – Vinit Agarwadekar (St Anthony’s SC, Siolim); Best defender – Cruz Gomes (Chandor Club); Best half – Brivan Dias (Chandor Club); Best forward – Anselm D’Souza (St Anthony’s SC, Siolim); Best player of the tournament – Sherwin Lobo (St Anthony’s SC, Siolim); Best Shooter of the tournanent – Moises D’Sa (Cahndor Club); highest scorer of the tournament – Pusparaj Mandrekar; Impressive player of Chandor Club – Safish Shaikh; Devoted player of Chandor Club – Richard D’Sa. In house award – Chandor Club and first scorer of the finals – Anselm D’Souza.

The winners – St Anthony’s SC, Siolim won a cash prize of Rs 60,000 while the runners up had to be satisfied with Rs 40,000 and the winners and the runners up trophy were also awarded to the respective teams.
