Ella, Old Goa: FC Goa capitalised on Dempo Sports Club’s inability to create goal scoring chances to defeat the power house of Goan football 2-0 and enter the final of the Goa Police Cup 2019 at the Dempo SC Academy ground in Ella on Tuesday.
In a match that saw the winners score one in each half, the evening cake was flavoured by the efforts of FC Goa’s Hayden Fernandes and their goalkeeper Sanga whose save at the half hour mark gave the winners the wherewithal to march to the finals.
The first twenty minutes were without any noteworthy moves and FC Goa enjoying the first ten and the losers the other. The ball was kept in possession but with little progression. However, it was the first free-kick of the evening awarded to FC Goa and was taken by Hayden that set the tone for the rest.
Hayden’s pile driver deflected for a corner after brushing the hands of diving Dempo goalkeeper Agnelo Gomes.
It took Dempo twenty minutes to test the FC Goa keeper and when they did – through Yogesh Kadam – Sanga let know how difficult it would be to get a ball past him.
FC Goa retaliated a few minutes later and this time, Hayden sent in a shot from the top of the box that beat Dempo keeper Agnelo, hit the cross bar and landed in front of Bawitlung who shot it straight to the Dempo keeper.
FC Goa took the lead in the 38th minute when substitute Vincy Barreto toed in a cross from the left by Christy Davis.
FC Goa led by a goal during the lemon break.
After the second half resumed, Lalnuntlunga received a cross from Vincy and shot it into the goal, which was saved, but in the second attempt the Mizo winger made two for FC Goa in the 49th minute.
