Sporting Clube de Goa hammered three past a lifeless Calangute Association and kept themselves in contention for the Goa Football Association (GFA) Professional League title at Duler stadium on Monday.
Sporting Clube de Goa scored in the third minute and went on to score two more within the remaining of the first half with Calangute Association unable to weave any noteworthy play during a major part of play.
The winners struck first when Brendon Gomes ran down the right flank and sent in a cross to unmarked Marcus Mascarenhas to blast in from close. The inability of Calangute lads to close in on their opponents – in their own danger area – proved costly to them.
Sporting took control of the match and increased their lead in the 12th minute, this time too, through a pass from the right flank when Girish Naik crossed in to unmarked Nigerian Philip Odogwu who simply blasted the ball past a helpless Calangute keeper Sanij Bugde.
Up by two goals, Sporting did not appear content and they nearly got their thid goal three minutes later when Stendly Fernandes let in a shot from the top of the box but Calangute keeper sanij rose to the occasion to block it away.
Calangute Association played with no purpose in this session and the closest they came to scoring was around the half hour mark when Dominic Fernandes’s saw his try go past the right of the Sporting bar.
Philip completed his brace in the 29th minute when he rose up to intelligent head the ball in for the third goal of the evening, of a cross by Dattaraj Goankar from the left.
Down by three goals and there appeared little urgency in Calangute’s approach with Valerio Rodrigues and Dominic Fernandes looking out of sorts during a major part of thirty minutes of play. Dominic had one of the easiest chances in the first session but his attempt was not on target.
The second session, like the first, belonged to Sporting Clube de Goa and in many ways to Calangute keeper Sanij who stole the admiration with his saves during the last forty five minutes of play. Sanij rose to the occasion, not just once or twice, but many times by either throwing himself at the ball or anticipating play.
Delton Colaco of sporting had a glorious chance to buttress Sporting’s lead at the hour mark but it was Sanij who came in his way to glory. A few minutes later , Philip was denied recording his hat trick by Sanij.
The Sporting lads tried hard to score again but Calangute keeper Sanij was the hard nut they could not crack.
Calangute Association – who played aimlessly through the ninety minutes – created their only chance in the 80th minute when substitute Chandan Govenkar saw his shot at goal being saved by Sporting keeper Akshat Hadkonkar and the rebound fell to Dominic whose shot was once again collected by Akshat – this time neatly.
The Sporting lads kept attempting for more goals but Calangute goalkeeper Sanij took the honours for avoiding his team a humiliating defeat.
