Speaker takes umbrage at ‘indecent’ behaviour of oppn MLAs

PANAJI: Speaker of the state legislative assembly Anant Shet, on Friday, took a serious note of the “indecent and undisciplined behaviour” of the opposition legislators in the House on Thursday, while the Chief Minister Laxmikant Parsekar was speaking during discussion on demands for grants.

“The members of the House have full right to attack the government, in a disciplined and democratic manner,” Shet added, pointing out, “However, I will not tolerate incidents like what happened yesterday.”

“It was also not proper on the part of four members of the House, to continue standing and shouting, when I stood up and requested them to sit,” he maintained, while naming the four opposition legislators.

Margao MLA Digambar Kamat requested the Speaker to expunge the names of the four MLAs, from his statement. “I would request the Speaker to make a generalised statement, and not to make particular mention of these four MLAs,” he added.

Leader of the Opposition Pratapsingh Rane, speaking on the occasion, said that whatever happened on Thursday should not have happened.

“However, both sides are to be blamed for the incident,” he noted, while appealing to the MLAs: “Let’s be cool and work in a manner that is beneficial to the House.”

Chief Minister Laxmikant Parsekar said that no one from treasury benches displayed bad behaviour, and they were all seated when the Speaker got up from his seat.

Finally, warning the members not to display such behaviour in the future, the Speaker ordered the mention of the names of the four opposition legislators to be expunged from his statement.
