With an aim to educating small industry on the importance of lowering energy costs, the World Trade Centre- Goa along with the PHD Chamber of Commerce and Industry (PHDCCI) organized a seminar on energy efficiency for MSMEs.
Vishwanath, chairman, MSME Committee, PHDCCI in his welcome address said that, MSMEs need to keep a tab on the energy they consume. The use of natural lighting is a big factor in saving of energy, he said. Vishwanath also urged MSMEs to carry out periodic energy audits so that wastages in energy consumption can be identified and suitable measures can be put in place to plug the wastages. It would add to the profitability of the organization, he said.
HP Kumar, former chairman and managing director, NSIC, in his speech pointed out that in some MSMEs the cost of energy is almost 20 to 25 per cent of the input costs, thus making them highly uncompetitive in the international markets. He also stressed on the need of periodic energy audits to reduce wasteful energy consumption and thus become competitive in the pricing of products both for the local as well as international markets.
GR Akadas, director, MSME DI, Goa, advised local units to implement lean manufacturing practices in their organizations to reduce the use of energy. KB Kulkarni, proprietor, Comfort Services, said that energy conservation would help in reducing the carbon footprint and global warming. He also made a detailed presentation on proper maintenance of air conditioning systems which would help in reducing the cost of energy consumption.
Anish Sousa, founder and CEO of Sun 360, gave a presentation on solar energy systems and how it could play a very important role in future in helping reduce the cost of energy consumption. Although installing and maintaining solar systems are a bit expensive initially, over a period of time the cost benefits are innumerable, he opined.
Ketan Kenkre, director, Sanya Energy LLP spoke on, The Missing Link to Renewable Energy. The seminar had Vijay Kalinani, deputy general manager, Small Industries Bank of India, made a presentation on “ Funding Schemes for MSMEs from SIDBI”
