Shiroda Higher Secondary School and Fr Agnel Higher Secondary School, Verna set up summit clash in the Subroto Mukherjee Cup football tournament for boys U-17 after chalking out wins in their respective semifinal matches played at artificial grounds, Fatorda-Margao on Thursday.

In the first semifinal, Shiroda HSS registered a comprehensive 5-1 win over Our Lady of Perpetual Succour HS. Helchian Souza scored a double for Shiroda HSS, finding the mark in the 36th and 41st minute after Sweeten Vaz had provided them the lead in the 25th minute.

Thereafter, Shiroda HSS scored through Krishan Kumar in the 46th minute and R Payeng in the 52nd minute to complete the route.

Our Lady of Perpetual High School, Cortalim pulled a goal back through Lesley Xavier in the 58th minute.

Both the teams appeared to be playing on level footing in the first 24 minutes of play and once Sweeten Vaz provided the lead, the match clearly began to tilt in favour of Shiroda HSS who exerted tremendous pressure on their
rivals.

Dominating both the sessions of play, Shiroda HSS looked completely confident and scored another goal through Helchain, whose angular shot gave no chance at all to the Perpetual Succour goalkeeper Joyfern D’Souza.

Our Lady of Perpetual Succour HS which looked brittle all the while thereafter caved under continues raids with Helchain bulging the nets again to complete his brace.

The second session was almost a one-sided affair as the players of Shiroda HSS raided the rival territory without much resistance.

Shiroda’s Krishna Kumar thereafter scored a great goal as he ran solo without much challenge from Perpetual defence, which was completely in shambles.

Shiroda HSS’s midfield as well as defence worked in complete coordination, moving the ball deep inside the rival territory time and often.

Shiroda HSS scored their fifth goal of the day through R Payeng, who after receiving a nice pass raced down the right flank and dodged two rival defenders before slamming the ball in.

The Cortalim school pulled a goal back through Lesley Xavier in the 58th minute when the Shiroda team played a relaxed game.

In the second semifinals, Fr Agnel Higher Secondary School, Verna edged past Guardian Angel Higher Secondary School, Curchorem 2-1.

The match between the two evenly-matched teams saw Fr Agnel HSS prevail over Guardian Angel HSS through goals by Velroy Borges and J Gauncar. Guardian Angel HSS pulled a goal back through Frazer Fernandes.
