Shiroda fishermen demand reinspection of fishing zones

Raising doubts yet again on the working of government authorities over the Coastal Zone Management Plan (CZMP) for Shiroda, fishermen have demanded a reinspection of fishing zones and have submitted a letter to the Village Panchayat Shiroda and Block Development Office at Ponda on Monday. Villagers have also threatened to agitate if the concerned department does not come clear over their CZMP plans.

According to villagers of Shiroda, on October 4 the fisheries department official at Ponda conducted a survey of the fishing zone in Shiroda village without taking the villagers or local fisherman into confidence.

The villagers claim that the survey has been conducted in a haphazard manner and completed within a day.

“Such a hasty survey of fishing zone may cause great inconvenience to villagers and may alter their lives drastically. Considering the same, we have requested the Panchayat as well as the BDO at Ponda to conduct a re-inspection of the fishing zone by taking the fishermen into confidence and disclose details about the plans that have been made” local fisherman said while speaking to this daily after giving a letter to the BDO office.

The villagers further informed that the Fisheries department through a letter dated September 23, 2019 had directed its official at Ponda to conduct a survey of the fishing zone in Shiroda by taking all related agencies into confidence for the purpose of CZMP.

However the locals said that the fisheries department official who came for the survey clicked some pictures of the fishing zone, interacted with a few farmers and returned back within a few hours.

Interestingly on October 4 the villagers including fisherman were at the BDO office at Ponda for half-a-day demanding explanation over the CZMP plan.

The fishermen said, “We think that something really fishy is going on in Shiroda when it comes to CZMP and the concerned authorities including the village panchayat is not clear about what is really going on. Villagers fear that the government may force their own CZMP on us”.

It may be recalled that, Shiroda villagers gheraoed the Ponda Block Development Office staffers last week demanding an explanation over the delay in conveying the consolidated village wise CZMP draft plan that has been sent to the panchayat recently by the government. During that time too villagers have raised suspicion over the working nature of the government agencies related to CZMP.
