NAVELIM: The mullet or shevtto has been formally declared as the fish of the state at the third edition of the Aqua fish Festival which got underway at Navelim on Thursday.
The four-day festival was inaugurated by the Deputy Chief Minister Francis D’Souza in the presence of Minister for Fisheries Avertano Furtado, former chief minister Digambar Kamat, Benaulim MLA Caetano Silva, director of fisheries, Shamilla Monteiro, among others.
Speaking at the function, the Deputy Chief Minister said that the exhibition is a good attempt of learning with some amusement
“These are small steps to understand the fish world,”he said adding there are a lot of varieties of fish both edible and ornamental but non-edible and it is a great effort by the department of fisheries to get these species together.
He said, “There is a need to stop the damage caused to the marine life. The state could consider having a large aquarium as found at other popular tourist destinations. We have taken small steps towards achieving this.”
Speaking at the function, the director declared that the shevtto or the (flat head mullet) as the state fish, adding its production (annual production of 280 tonne) is 7 per cent of the state’s gross fish production and is also found during the monsoon.
Furtado, later formally unveiled the mullet as the fish of Goa.
