BICHOLIM: The director of higher education Bhaskar Nayak said that Shenoi Goembab has made laudable contribution to Konkani language, adding, he has boosted the cultural heritage of the state through Konkani literature.
He was speaking as a chief guest at the celebration of Shenoi Goembab’s 139th birth anniversary on Thursday here. The function was organised by Goa Konkani Academy in collaboration with Bicholim Konkani Seva Kendra. The chairperson of BMC Satish Gaonkar, GKA president Madhav Borkar, president of KSK-Bicholim Vithal Vernekar and Shantaram Walvalkar were present on the dais.
Nayak appealed to the Konkani language supporters to enrich Konkani literature and maintain traditions set by the stalwart Shenoi Goembab.
Bicholim chairperson Gaonkar announced that BMC will provide space for erecting statue of Shenoi Goembab in the garden near Zantye hall and the garden will be named as “Shenoi Goembab Garden”.
GKA president Madhav Borkar also spoke on the occasion. Earlier, Vithal Vernekar welcomed the guests. Pruthviraj Sardessai proposed the vote of thanks. Radhika Satoskar and Anil Vernekar compered the function.
In the meantime, the concluding ceremony was held in the evening in the presence of deputy collector of Bicholim Mahadev Arondekar and Chetan Acharya.
The vital contribution of Goembab to growth of Konkani language was applauded by Acharya. He said writers should not write with an aim to get awards, but to preserve the language.
Social worker Mukund Kadkade was felicitated at the hands of deputy collector Arondekar with a shriphal, shawl and a memento.
Bharati Nayak was also felicitated on the occasion. The students, who excelled in Konkani subject, were also feted.
Rupesh Thanekar welcomed while Sunil Pilgaonkar proposed the vote of thanks. Various other programmes were held to mark the celebration.
