Cansaulim: In a most thrilling match of the tournament that saw as many as 11 goals being scored, Raia Sporting Club emerged ultimate winners as they overcame FC Siolim 6-5 to book their place in the quarterfinals of the CAC’s Three Kings Cup, at T B Cunha Sports Complex grounds, Cansaulim, on Tuesday.
Sheehan Fernandes scored a hat-trick in Raia SC’s hard-fought win as he found the mark in the 5th, 10th and 20th minute. Klins Mendes struck twice in the 52nd and 55th minute while Jude Cardozo scored their other goal in the 38th minute.
FC Siolim’s Pusparaj Mandrekar (12th and 70th minute) and Vipul Pednekar (45th and 65th minute) found the back of the rival nets on two occasions each while Sangam Pedekar score their other goal in the 27th minute.
Raia SC started the match quite impressively and went into the lead as earl y as the fifth minute as Sheehan beat the Siolim keeper off a neat pass from Shawn D’Souza.
Sheehan was in the thick of action once again and crashed a good shot to the far end of the rival nets to put his team two goals up in the 10th minute.
FC Siolim retaliated very soon as Pusparaj almost scored in the 12th minute, but a rival defender somehow snatched the ball from his feet when he was about to pull the trigger.
Within the next three minutes of play, Puparaj bulged the nets from 25 yards beating Raia SC keeper Lio Colaco.
Sheehan who was in his best elements then completed his hat-trick as hoodwinked the Siolim keeper with a neat placement in the 20th minute.
Siolim lads thereafter regrouped well and pulled another goal back through Sangam Pednekar in the 27th minute to keep the score 3-2 in favour of Raia SC at half time.
The second session too saw both the teams hungry for goals and even though Raia SC had a slight edge, the Siolim lads fought with all their might as they worked hard in all the departments of
Jude Cardozo made the score 4-2 in favour of Raia SC in the 38th minute following a miss-pass by a rival defender.
Siolim came back into action with Vipul Pednekar bulging the nets in the 45th minute to pull another goal back.
Raia SC then swung into an attacking mode with Klins finding the mark in the 52nd minute with a 20 yard shot. Klins then completed his brace of goals two minutes later with an angular effort.
In the last few minutes of the match, Raia defenders tightly marked Siolim’s in-form men Vipul and Pusparaj and managed to carry the day in their favour.
