Sewage plant: Colva VP to issue second notice

COLVA: The gram sabha of Colva, on Sunday, decided that a second show cause cum stop work notice be issued to the sewage treatment plant that is being set up in the village.

It was also resolved to ensure that problems related to stray dogs and garbage are redressed.

The panchayat had issued a show-cause notice earlier this year after locals objected to the location of the plant and the fact that the water from the plant would be released directly into the sea. Following the issuance of the earlier notice, the panchayat had also asked the sewerage corporation to submit permissions it had obtained to set up the plant. At the last gram sabha, it was also decided that the panchayat should seek legal advice on further course of action.

Informing the gram sabha of the legal advice sought, sarpanch Anthony Fernandes said that another notice would be sent.

“After seeking legal advice, it has been decided to issue a second show-cause notice cum stop work order. In addition, it has also been resolved to have an architect to study the plans of the plant and conduct an inspection and see what changes could be made to the existing plant,” said the sarpanch.

The village, that draws a huge crowd of tourists to its beach, has recently seen an increase in the number of stray dogs that have on several occasions attacked people visiting the beach.

In this regard, the gram sabha has resolved to write to the tourism department to tackle the situation.

“We will be writing to the tourism department to help us identify a place for sheltering the dogs and work on a model to provide food for them. We have also decided to ask them to help us by providing some land to segregate dry waste that is collected in the village,” said Fernandes.

It was also resolved unanimously by the gram sabha to organise a function by including the local parish to felicitate Colva resident and FDA officer Dr Iva Fernandes, who first detected the presence of formalin in fish during a surprise inspection that was conducted at Margao wholesale market in July this year.
