Seriously ill woman buried alive by husband

Bicholim: A 42-year-old seriously ill woman was buried alive by her husband in the heap of mud near a canal at Murmawada-Narva in Bicholim taluka on Wednesday night.

Bicholim police have arrested the husband and recovered the body of the victim from the mud heap.

The incident came to light at 9.30 am on Thursday when canal workers were removing the mud by a JCB machine.

Police sources said that Tukaram Ramnath Shet Gaonkar from Murmawada-Narva took his seriously sick wife Tanvi on his shoulders on Wednesday night to the canal site, where earth-digging work has been going on, and buried her alive in the mud. On Thursday he went back to the place where he had buried his wife and asked the canal workers not to remove the mud from the place where the woman had been buried.

However, the workers continued with their work with help of the JCB machine. The workers found the dead body when they were removing the mud.

The accused ran away from the scene seeing the dead body. It is learnt that Tukaram is mentally unsound.

Police rushed to the spot upon receiving the information and recovered the body in the presence of Bicholim mamlatdar Praveenjay Pandit and senior police officials. 

Police have registered an offence of murder against Tukaram under Section 302 of the IPC.

Bicholim police inspector Sanjay Dalvi is investigating the case.
