Sawant: govt committed to welfare of weaker sections of society

Margao: Chief Minister Pramod Sawant, on Sunday, said that his government is committed to the welfare of the weaker sections of the society irrespective of caste, creed and religion.

Sawant said that the fruits of the development of the state should reach the last person of the society and therefore he has been working towards it.

He said that his government has been on firm footing and the positive changes are for the overall development of the state.

Sawant was speaking at the annual felicitation programme of Akhil Gomantak   Shatriya Maratha Samaj 2018-19 at Ravindra Bhavan, Margao.

Former chief minister and MLA Pratapsing Rane, president Mahesh Gaonkar, senior vice president Sandeep Desai, vice president  Ulhas Shetty, secretary Shripad Parab, treasurer Suhas Phal Desai, youth president Diptesh Dessai of Akhil Gomantak Shatriya Maratha Samaj (AGSMS) were also present on the occasion.

The chief minister said he considers the late Atal Bihari Vajpai as his role model, who always gave first priority to nation, and added that he inspired him in politics.

Students from the samaj, who scored highest marks in std Xth, XIIth, graduation and students who has done post graduation, MBBS and  PhD were felicitated on the occasion.

Appreciating the students for their achievements in education, sports etc, Sawant urged all the students to take inspiration from the act and knowledge of Chatrapati Shivaji Maharaj and be self confident to achieve highest target for a bright future.

“Though the importance of sword is slowly becoming less, we have with us pen and knowledge through which we can be successful,” he

added.

Recalling his school memories when Akhil Gomantak   Kshatriya Maratha Samaj felicitated him after passing standard Xth, XIIth and BMS, Sawant said that he will be always indebted to the society.

Chief Minister revealed that around 1,500 to 2,000 students benefited from economic backward classes (EBC) reservation.

Earlier, Jeevan Gourav Puraskar was awarded to freedom fighter Madhukar B N Desai from Culwada, Cuncolim at the hands of the Chief Minister.

The function began with the lightning of a traditional lamp and Ganesh vandana dance performance by members of AGSMS.

Vijay Kumar Kopre along with other three compered the function while  Deepak Dessai proposed the vote of thanks.
