Sanguem villagers gherao PWD official over water shortage

Curchorem: The agitated villagers of Vaddem rehabilitation site of Sanguem on Friday took out a morcha to the office of the PWD (water supply) at Sanguem as a protest against the scarcity of drinking water.

The villagers tried to gherao AE Bishalli and were not satisfied with the reasons given by him with respect of irregular supply of drinking water. On their demand the executive engineer Balan was summoned to the site. After hearing the grievances of the villagers, EE Balan visited colony No 1 and took stalk of the situation. He assured the villagers that a no return valve will be fixed to the tank providing water to the villagers.

Due to the absence of the valve the water from the tank was returning back to the well from where the water was being pumped. He also assured that the open well will be covered and the well water will be tested to see if any chemical is present in the well water.

Speaking to media, local panchayat member Josephina Rodrigues said that there was a shortage of drinking water for the last 4 days in colony No 1 of Vaddem. She said the people had sacrificed their land for the construction of the Selaulim dam but it is unfortunate to note that the dam water is being supplied to whole of South Goa but the displaced villagers are not getting water.

A social activist Chandan Unandkar said that people were shifted to the rehabilitation site by the government assuring that they will be provided with all necessary facilities. He said that for the last two and half months they are not getting regular water supply.  He alleged that no testing of well water has been carried out by the authorities.

Speaking about the morcha he said that if the water problem was not solved immediately then after the end of the code of conduct the residents will take to the streets in large numbers.

The Sanguem Congress block president Meshu D’Costa expressed his deep anguish as the persons who had sacrifice their land for the construction of the Selaulim dam are not getting water. He demanded that the Government should install a small water purification plant and supply water to the displaced people of Sanguem.
