Nagoa: Scoring once in either half through medio Ashnoy Gomes and substitute striker Amar Hanabaratti, Salgaocar FC registered a hard-fought 2-1 win against Churchill Brothers FC in the AIFF Sub-Junior League match played at Nagoa grounds, Verna on Sunday.
Salgaocar FC bulged the nets in the 35+1 minute through Ashnoy Gomes and then in the second session substitute striker Amar Hanabaratti scored the match-winner in the 55th minute through an angular header.
Churchill Brothers pulled a goal back through their tall and lanky medio Sharmad Kurade with a power-packed 25-yard shot which crashed to the far corner of the nets, giving no chance at all to Salgaocar FC.
Salgaocar FC who had the upper hand in the first half had quite a number of chances but the Churchill Brothers FC keeper Shawn Veigas who had a good day under the bar went on making some spectacular saves.
Salgacoar’s first opportunity to go into the lead came off as early as the eighth minute when Shane was well-placed to take the shot at the goal, but the medio delayed a bit and in the process lost the ball to a rival player. As the match neared to lemon break, Salgaocar FC finally found the mark through Ashnoy Gomes who collected a cross from the right flank and after dodging two rival defenders banged the ball to the far corner of the rival nets to go into the lead.
The script of the match changed drastically in the second half. Churchill Brothers came up with some flourishing moves but the Salgaocar FC defence gathered itself well to stop the rival strikers from finding the mark.
Churchill’s Ricky Fernandes tried twice to score a goal — once in the 35th minute when his well taken shot just missed the mark narrowly and on the other in the 40th minute when his good shot was collected safely by the Salgacoar FC keeper Reihan Gomes.
As the match progressed, Salgaocar FC buttressed their lead through substitute striker Amar Hanabaratti who headed angularly to the far corner of Churchill’s nets off a cross from Alden Fernandes in the 55th minute. Churchill Brothers retaliated with some urgency and after failing to get a goal in their favour on several occasions, finally pulled a goal back through a long shot unleashed by Sharmad Kurade which crashed to the far corner of Salgaocar FC nets in the 70th minute.
