Margao: Panchayats, and state departments in the South Goa district celebrated Goa’s Liberation Day on Thursday by unfurling national flag as well as holding various activities in their respective areas.
The panchayat of Cavelossim which has received the ‘Cleanest Village’ award at the hands of the Governor, during the day, held a discussion of its gram panchayat development plan (GPDP).
“We held a special gram sabha today wherein we discussed the GPDP and approved it. Since we have been awarded with the cleanest village title we also held a discussion on the future course we should follow for garbage management. The gram sabha members also congratulated us for our efforts and the award,” said Cavelossim sarpanch Dionizio Dias.
In the neighboring village of Carmona too, the panchayat hoisted the national flag.
Sarpanch Allwyn Jorge said that since the GPDP is yet to be finalised, it would be discussed during the next gram sabha.
“Just two days back, the village development committee (VDC) held a meeting to discuss the GPDP but since we were not able to finish the draft plan, we have decided to take it up after Christmas, maybe at the next ordinary gram sabha,” said Jorge.
Benaulim panchayat too hoisted the national flag at the office, and later took up a cleanliness drive and collected roadside garbage from several wards of the village. The drive also covered the road stretch just near the site of ongoing western bypass work that has in the recent times become a dumping ground for mixed garbage.
Apart from panchayats, several departments, including the fire department celebrated the
Deputy Director (fire Services) Nitin Raiker along with fire department officials, took part in the programme organised for unfurling the national flag at the district fire station, South Zone, Margao.
