‘MT Lotus’ tug and ‘Bhageerath’ pontoon both grounded at Arossim beach on Sunday

Rough weather delays towing of pontoon at Arossim beach

VASCO: Hectic efforts are being made to tow away the grounded pontoon from the Arossim shore on Sunday, however all efforts failed due to the rough weather condition prevailing in the Arabian Sea.

The issue pertaining to the removal of the pontoon from the Arossim beach was discussed in the gram sabha meeting of Cansaulim-Arossim-Cuelim Village Panchayat on Sunday. The gram sabha members blamed the sarpanch and other ruling panch members for issuing permission for the beach wedding party on the pontoon.

The Cortalim MLA and Minister for Science and Technology Alina Saldanha gave a deadline to the owner of the pontoon for its removal by Monday (April 25) and hectic efforts were being made by the owner to remove the pontoon from the site.

Speaking to some of the villagers of Arossim, they disclosed that the pontoon could damage the environment and even it could pose a danger to tourists who visit the beach in the summer.

“It’s summer vacation and students/children visit the beach on a large scale”, stated an aggrieved villager and further feared a danger to the lives of the kids, in case the grounded pontoon is washed ashore with a strong undercurrent.

“The pontoon has become a hazard for the Arossim beach”, told another villager and demanded an enquiry against the sarpanch of Cansaulim-Arossim-Cuelim Village Panchayat for the issuance of permission to hold wedding parties onboard the pontoon.
