Margao-based Paulin Granites is the only manufacturing and export unit in Goa
Last year, a life-size statue of Goa’s first Chief Minister Dayanand Bandodkar was unveiled at the secretariat complex at Porvorim. The statue stands atop a specially designed granite pedestal. Not many will know that this pedestal was crafted by Margao-based Paulin Granites.
Paulin Granites is probably one of the oldest granite companies in Goa. The unit is a sister concern of the Pauline group of companies that was started by late Sebastiao Paulino Rodrigues in 1907. He is regarded as a pioneer in the business for being the first to import hexagonal tiles from Marseille (France) for most of the churches and other heritage mansions in Goa. These beautiful tiles still adorn the floorings and wall facades of these buildings to this day.
Today, Paulin Granites is managed by Sebastiao’s sons, Savio and Allwyn Rodrigues, who are both engineers. The company happens to be the only granite manufacturing unit in Goa. Its expert markers personally visit the quarries located in various states and carefully inspect the blocks before transporting it for processing. Paulin boasts of state-of-the-art machinery at its granite yard at Margao for cutting solid granite blocks. Apart from its automatic pressure polishing machine for slabs, it has recently introduced an automated moulding machine which allows for moulding at a quicker pace.
“At Paulin Granites, we work with quality and precision. Our machinery gives us the advantage of cutting granite of variable thickness with a highly polished mirror finish along with varied textures. The pedestal for the Dayanand Bandodkar statue required a certain thickness. Instead of granite slabs, thick granite blocks were used that were flamed and fitted. We were the only ones capable of executing this job,” says younger brother Allwyn.
Paulin Granites also happens to be the only granite exporting unit in Goa. The company currently exports to Manchester and Glasgow through its unit S J P Exports at Cuncolim Industrial Estate. It now plans to begin exports to America in the next 3 – 4 months.
“We began exporting seven years ago. Apart from having an international presence, we have also gained valuable expertise in new techniques and technology in granite production. Our workers have also been trained by our UK counterparts in moulding and polishing granite,” says Savio.
Customers would only use granite slabs as kitchen platforms, but this trend is now changing, according to Allwyn. “Today, granite can be used for windows, railings, skirtings, floorings, door framings, external facades, etc. When compared to marble, granite is suitable for Goa’s weather and cost-wise it is on par with wood and comes with the added advantage of durability,” he points out.
An ISO 9001:2008 certified company, Paulin Granites has outlets at Panaji and Pilerne Industrial Estate. “Providing quality products is our motto and that’s a reason we have a brand value. Many builders recommend our name to their clients. Of late, many people now prefer to have the moulding work done at our factory since they find it much cheaper and hassle-free. Besides, it also minimises dust and noise population. Our business is based on mutual trust and unlike many roadside traders, we don’t mislead our clients when it comes to measurements and grades. Also, we don’t apply any sort of oil to hide cracks on slabs to give it an artificial finish. This tends to fade away in a couple of months. Instead, we employ quality abrasives for all polishing work,” says Savio.
Paulin provides granite slabs in 47 different colours. It specialises in providing 30 mm kitchen granite platforms which is free of cement and joints. It also offers signature products like single-piece granite door frames that are ideal for bathrooms as it can be installed within an hour. It also offers various textured finishes like anti-skid leather, honed, lapator and river which are very effective in external areas viz pavements, steps, driveways, bathrooms, swimming pools, etc. The company also provides gang saw slabs in jumbo sizes. Vertical slabs are also available in various sizes which are manually polished. There are readymade railings, skirtings and balusters as well.
Apart from this, Paulin specialises in landscaping articles such as readymade benches, bird baths, corner stands and shelves. It also supplies rustic and uncut surfaces which are popular among many architects. In addition, one can also opt for exclusive granite furniture like tabletops, dining table sets, teapoys, corner stands, shelves, TV stands, etc.
Due to their expertise, Paulin Granites have been involved in many prestigious projects like the Bambolim Cross Church and the monument of St Jose Vaz at Cavelossim church which was done recently. For last year’s Lusofonia Games, the company had supplied readymade one piece, highly polished granite frames. Apart from this, it is also involved in many government jobs.
