Margao: Villagers of Loutolim on Sunday resolved to demand the immediate and unconditional revocation of the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA). The villagers also demanded that the central government desist from implementing the proposed National Population Register (NPR) and the National Register of Citizens (NRC).
The resolution was proposed by Joaquin Gracias during the gram sabha. A lengthy discussion was held on the issue by members of the gram sabha following which a unanimous resolution was passed against CAA, NRC and NPR.
Interestingly, the resolution passed against CAA is in sharp contrast to the stand of local legislator Wilfred D’Sa, who supported CAA during the recently-concluded assembly session.
The gram sabha was chaired by sarpanch Xavier Fernandes. A presentation on the People’s Biodiversity Register of Loutolim was made by Dr Vidya of Green Goa Life Foundation and a discussion was held on inputs to be added to the report. Dr Vidya urged the villagers to submit any additional inputs to the panchayat office by February 24.
Two more proposals were added to the budget, which was approved in the earlier gram sabha.
The gram sabha members urged the panchayat and sarpanch not to issue any no-objection certificate (NOC) to the contractor, who is constructing the Borim to Verna via Loutolim link road until the public works department provides reports of inspections held earlier including the one held with the MLA and PWD Minister.
It was also demanded that letters be forwarded to police to implement the High Court order on illegal extraction of sand on the banks of River Zuari.
The panchayat secretary earlier read the minutes of the previous gram sabha. Five panchayat members were present at the gram sabha, which ended around 12.30 pm.
