CARMONA: Villagers of Carmona have given the PWD one week’s time to restore the Gavon pond in Carmona which was built up with stones, concrete and cement. They warned that they will come on to the streets if their demands are not fulfilled.
The PWD officials led by the assistant engineer R S Godi on Tuesday carried out inspection of the lake as some minor work was underway. Villagers are demanding building of retaining wall all along the banks. The minor work was suspended after strong objection from the villagers while the comunidade of Carmona had thrown a surprise alleging that the work was being carried out without any NOC.
A large number of villagers gathered during the inspection and questioned the PWD officials over the rationale in using concrete and cement to build up the banks of the pond while the panchayat had proposed fortifying of banks with stones and construction of concrete steps to the pond.
Though the officials tried to justify the work carried out, they finally agreed to dismantle the work. Godi assured villagers to put up the matter before the executive engineer who will in turn take a call on what is to be done.
The villagers however gave the department a week’s time to start work to rectify ‘their mistake’ adding that if the work does not commence they will be forced to come on to the road.
The farmers alleged that the work was being done without NoCs from them adding that the department had left debris in the field which now threaten to destroy the fields.
