Vardhan,Yashraj clinch national ranking doubles crown
PANAJI: Goa’s Vardhan Suhan Karkal and Maharashtra’s Yashraj Dalvi played confidently to overpower the duo of Kartik Saxena of Delhi and Lesten Vaz of Maharashtra to clinch the Yonex Sunrise all India ranking boys U-12 Super Series Tennis Tournament held at the Practennis Centre at Andheri, Mumbai on Friday. The Duo displayed controlled aggression and won the finals in straight sets 6-4, 6-1. Goa’s young swimmer Xavier won two bronze medals in the U-14 category at AAFS Asian Age Group Championships 2015 held in Thailand. Xavier clocked timing of 26: 73 in 50mts butterfly and 59:00 in 100mts butterfly 59:00. He is trained by Dolphins Aquatics Bangalore under Coach Nihar Amin
Poriebhat enter finals
PANAJI: Poriebhat entered the finals of Fr Bruno Diniz memorial Nagoa-Verna inter-ward football tournament, defeating Mungrupoi 2-1 on Saturday. Poriebhat opened the score sheet in the 5th minute of the match through Santan Rego. They were leading 1-0 at the half time. Poriebhat scored the second goal through Vincy in the 37th minute. Mungrupoi scored through Roy Lobo.
Edwin Rodrigues new chief of Verna SC
PANAJI: Edwin Rodrigues was elected unopposed as the president of Verna Sports Club as the club elected its new committee for the year 2015-16. Michael D’Souza was elected as vice-president while other office bearers are: Jose D’Souza (general secretary), Rafael Dacosta (treasurer), Allan Noronha (assistant treasurer), Camilo Barreto (sports secretary) and Manuel Fernandes (sports manager). Gabrial Rodrigues, Bonnaventure D’Souza, Charles Braganza and Andre are executive members.
Rohan Ahuja bags 2nd IM Norm
PANAJI: Geno Brand Ambassador, FM Rohan Ahuja (2391) defeated GM Vasily Papin (2499) of Russia in the 8th round of the Baku Open (Over 2250 Category) to clinch his second IM Norm with a round to spare. Though he subsequently lost the final round to Russian GM Evgeny Romanov (2573), his performance rating of 2471 was good enough to comfortably attain the IM Norm. He finished 17th overall in this exceptionally strong tournament for players above 2250 ELO and gained 19 ELO points in the process. He will reach an ELO rating of 2410 in the Nov 2015 FIDE Rating list. He becomes the youngest Goa player to cross the ELO 2400 barrier and only the second Goa player ever to do so.
