PY Nuvem see off Marna-Siolim on way to semis

Benaulim: Parish Youth, Nuvem rode on fine brace by striker Francis Colaco and a strike from Godfrey Mascarenhas to beat St Anthony’s SC, Marna-Siolim 3-1 and enter the semifinals of 43rd Cana Benaulim Soccer tournament, at St John, the Baptist grounds, Benaulim on Thursday.

Playing an attacking game PY Nuvem went into the lead in the very 3rd minute after Francis dashed into the box and let go an angular effort that stunned Marna-Siolim keeper Salil Chari.

Marna-Siolim lads thereafter began to play a defensive game and even as PY Nuvem strikers began pressing hard, they were ably contained by Marna-Siolim defence with timely clearances.

However two minutes before half time, Marna-Siolim citadel fell again as Francis Colaco after receiving a neat pass on the left flank dodged two rival defenders and slammed the ball to the far corner of Marna-Siolim nets.

The second session saw Marna-Siolim stitching some good moves as they kept the ball low and resorted to some quick passes that created large gaps in the Nuvem back four.

During one such move, Pushparaj Mandrekar bulged the nets to pull a goal back in the 45th minute when he ran solo and after drawing out the PY Nuvem keeper Bruno D’Mello sent a cracking shot to the far corner of the nets that dazed the Nuvem keeper.

The match then wore on with some nice moves at either end during which time Sangam Pednekar missed a penalty while Pushparaj too was unable to find the mark from close distance.

Suddenly PY Nuvem created a nice foray which saw attacking medio Albino Pereira almost pull the trigger but he was brought down by Marna-Siolim defender Gawas that resulted in the penalty which Godfrey Mascarenhas converted with great style to score PY Nuvem’s third goal for the day. PY Nuvem will next meet United Club of Nerul in the semifinals to be played on June 22.
