PWD stops ‘recruitment’ through contractors

Panaji: The Public Works Department, on Monday, decided to stop recruitment of staff, on a contract basis, through contractors.

The decision was taken during the meeting chaired by the PWD Minister Deepak Pauskar with the department officials and an official of the PWD Labour Supply Society.

Pauskar told the media that the decision has been taken to stop recruitment of staff on a contract basis through private contractors in order to streamline the recruitment system at the PWD.

He further informed that the Chief Minister and the Cabinet have given approval to take contract staffers, which were working under private contractors, under the PWD Labour Supply Society.

“Those contract staffers, who have completed five years, will be taken under PWD  Labour Supply Society, and henceforth no staff in the PWD will be recruited on a contract basis through the contractors,” he said.

The PWD Minister also informed that the government will soon give temporary status to more 450 employees, who have completed eight years under PWD Labour Supply Society, and added that the government is contemplating to revise the salaries of contract workers working under the said society.

According to him, the contract period was 11 months, but even after that they were not renewing the contracts, which have resulted into delay in paying salaries of some contract staff.

“Whatever salaries of the contract staff are pending, it will be cleared soon by the government,” he added.
