After a four-hour long surgery on the road, Animal Husbandry doctors saved the life of a pregnant stray cow at Shiroda on Friday night.
As per information, the stray cow was lying sick beside the road at Mhalwada-Shiroda and on noticing the same, villagers informed the panchayat about it on Friday evening. The sarpanch Amit Shirodkar along with others then contacted Dhyan Foundation and Animal Husbandry doctors.
Local veterinary officer Dr Tushar Gaunekar along with assistant reached the spot and after inspecting the cow, the doctor learned that the cow was in calving process and calf had died inside her with dystocia. To save the life of the cow, it was necessary to take the calf out and due to her condition, moving the cow to the hospital was not possible, veterinary assistant informed.
Considering it, Dr Gaunekar contacted the assistant director Prashant Naik and surgeon Dr Natasha Coutinho from Margao. Both of them rushed to the spot along with Dr Madhura Naik and after taking stock of the situation, they decided to go for surgery at the site itself.
With no much facilities available and it being almost midnight, doctors with their assistants conducted the four-hour long surgery under streetlights, mobile torch and managed to save the cow. Following which, the cow was handed over to the Dhyan Foundation for further care.
“Calf was born with wry neck and malformation, due to which it died and cow suffered dystocia,” Dr Tushar Gaunekar said, while speaking to this daily after surgery.
“Doctors did commendable job to save the life of the cow and worked till late night,” sarpanch Amit Shirodkar said and expressed satisfaction over the worked done by the doctors.
