Portion of weak slab collapses at Sada jail

VASCO: A portion of the weak concrete slab of the cell no 10 of Sada Sub Jail came crashing down late Sunday late evening. Fortunately, there were no casualties. Following the incident, all the 35 inmates who were lodged in the cell were shifted to another cell.

As per available information from the jail authorities, the incident occurred at around 9 p.m. after dinner was served to the inmates. All the 35 inmates who were lodged into the cell no-10 were totally unaware of the incident, which came to light after some of the jail guards heard the cracking sound.

Speaking to this daily, the assistant superintendent of jail Bhanudas Pednekar said that the PWD was many times requested to repair the weak portion of the slab.

“The Sada Sub Jail authorities have made several letters and also sent reminders to the PWD about the unsafe portion of the concrete slab, but it turned a nelson’s eye,” said Pednekar.

He further said that the issue of the weak portion of the slab was discussed at the board of visitors meeting which was held on July 16 in the jail premises, but despite of the warnings to the PWD, it failed to initiate appropriate measures.

“The portion of the slab has collapsed only due to the negligence on the part of the PWD,” he alleged and added that he would submit a report to the inspector general of prisons on Monday.

“After I came to know about the incident from the jail guards and jail officials, I immediately rushed to the jail in order to take the stock of the situation,” he said. “I asked the concerned PWD engineer to visit the site on late Sunday evening, but he told me that he is attending a party and so unable to come to the site. It is a sheer negligence on part of the PWD,” he  said.

Deputy Superintendent of police, Vasco, Sucheta Dessai, Mormugao PI Kapil Nayak were also at the jail premises till late Sunday night.
