Perfect Pick-Me-Up

Sinead McManus

I am most certainly not a fan of sticky weather. It saps the body of energy, leaves you feeling mighty uncomfortable and tends to get unpredictable. During times like these, there’s nothing better than some time off at the spa.

Living in Candolim has its perks, and after a few visits, I find myself lucky to count the Warren Tricomi Salon and Spa at Grand Mercure Shrem Goa Resort as one of those. It’s more of a wellness centre than just a spa and offers so much more than a regular experience.

Choosing a quiet weekday, I set off for my date with rejuvenation. It helps when you decide to ignore the pile of work on your desk to give yourself that much-needed break. It somehow provides even more satisfaction and brings you back to work more dedicated than ever, and in a more relaxed state of mind.

From the get-go, the spa projects a warm, relaxing feeling. Located right next to the pool, it is done up in deep woody tones, and is well integrated with the natural spaces all around. “The theme of the spa is to bring international wellness in a luxurious natural environment. When in the spa, our guest must not feel he is ‘inside’ a spa, but rather the outside and that the beautiful nature of Goa is part of his spa experience in a luxurious and international environment,” spa manager Sajith Chand said.

You can see they’ve hit the nail on the head with that, as the 20,000 square foot centre is beautifully integrated with one of the best samples of Goa’s green spaces in that part of town. The lounge is spacious, and even though it has sparse furniture, it is comfortable and very welcoming. It’s the perfect spot to enjoy a cup of herbal tea – a warm concoction of lemon and honey – as you decide what treatment you’d like to take. Loungers invite you for a quick foot massage should you have the time.

I settled for a full body massage that was certain to ease away any stress and perk up my spirits in the humid weather. We went towards one of the wooden treatment rooms. Warren Tricomi has seven single treatment rooms and one couple’s suite with Goa’s only couple’s hammam ritual. It also has a nature ensconced pedicure area, a high-end salon, relaxation zones and a yoga deck literally overlooking a sea of greenery.

Each room is fitted with a built-in shower, WC and outdoor shower area. For couples, there is a private outdoor relaxation area and Jacuzzi. I changed into my bathrobe and was led off towards the steam and sauna area. Settling in for a good long steam, I felt my pores open up in anticipation of the massage to come.

My polite and vivacious masseuse then led me back to the cabin for my chosen therapy. It started off with a short foot massage to ease up the muscles. Zen music on, bathrobe off, and my mind was already falling apart. She was really quite good – quiet except when enquiring about the pressure, and polite.

The rhythmic movement of the massage was welcoming and one could feel the tension wash away with each strong stroke. At the end, a gentle head massage left a sure message to return. I was rubbed down with cooling fragrant oils and a warm towel to allow the full effects of the 60-minute therapy settle in.

On the way out, I sneaked a peak at the hammam room. Warren Tricomi’s heated stone hammam tables are the only ones available in north Goa, and the treatment includes soothing exfoliating scrubs followed by a relaxing massage. Later, a nourishing wrap helps refresh the skin and brings out its best. The treatment ends with a baby soft Vichy shower. It’s a wonderful option for couples who’d like some time together with a whole lot of pampering thrown in.

Treatments at Warren Tricomi Salon and Spa leave a bitter-sweet note – sadness that the experience has ended, but happiness at the effect it’s created. But I can say without doubt that the happiness and satisfaction far outweighs the other.
