Parrikar to lay foundation stone for Rs 12.4 cr Vaddem lake beautification

VASCO: The foundation stone for the proposed beautification-cum-upgradation work of the Vaddem lake estimated to cost Rs 12.40-crore will be laid at the hands of Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar and the date for the same will be finalised soon, Dabolim MLA Mauvin Godinho has said.

Godinho, who is also the chairman of South Goa Planning and Development Authority, was speaking to media in Vasco after commissioning the work of construction of two culverts one near Lima Leitao House near the Merces chapel and another at Merces stream (Zorint) in Vaddem, estimated to cost Rs 12 lakh in presence of Mormugao municipality councillors Kritesh Gaonkar, Rajan Faldessai and Yatin Kamurlekar besides former councillor Sudesh Kolgaonkar, social worker Caitan Xavier, Anita Thorat, Ligorio Monteiro, Ajoy D’Souza, Ajay Thorat and others.

Godinho revealed that the under the beautification-cum-upgradation work, there will be a recreational centre, pedestrian-friendly track suitable for walks, benches installed, floating fountains with illuminations, boating facilities, strengthening of parapet, major illumination work done on all four corners of the lake besides the quality of lake water will be improved for better growth of aquatic life, a raft constructed to help Hindu community people to immerse idols of Lord Ganesh during Ganesh Chaturthi celebration.

Steps will also be initiated to maintain the environment-friendly atmosphere, better connectivity between the lake and the sea for smooth flow of water throughout the day and planting of Bougainvillea trees towards the roadside. The work will be executed by the Goa State Urban Development Agency (GSUDA).

Godinho raised strong concern over the dumping of garbage, plastics and pet bottles into drains and nullahs due to which water gets stagnated. He urged the people to maintain their surroundings clean. He disclosed that the road leading to Merces, Vaddem will be hot-mix carpeted very shortly. He opined that his constituency office will be inaugurated in the first week of March at Lima Leitao godown in order to help people of New-Vaddem and other parts of Dabolim constituency to get their works done. He also stressed on starting paper bag industry in order to make Dabolim plastic-free.
