Panchayat to help Bethoda woman

Ponda: The Bethoda panchayat has decided to help Bhima Gaonkar (75), who has lost her nest egg of Rs 52,000 to the 2016 demonetisation of bank notes.

Bethoda sarpanch Tejas Shetkar, deputy sarpanch Jaanvi Gaonkar and panch member Chandrakant Samant visited the elderly woman at her residence  at Taiginyem in Bethoda  in Ponda taluka on Tuesday.

Samant said the panchayat has decided to help the woman by providing some financial assistance.

“We have not finalised the exact amount to be disbursed to Bhima Gaonkar. But a decision to help her has been taken as she has lost her  entire saving,” Samant said.

Chief Minister Pramod Sawant is planning to support the elderly woman through the Chief Minister Relief Fund.

Ponda police have seized all the banned notes from the woman following the news report that appeared in ‘The Navhind Times’ on Monday.

A statement of the woman has been recorded as to how she came upon  the scrapped notes worth of Rs 52,000.

Sources said the police action came on the direction of Chief Minister’s Office.
