Sarzora : The Sarzora village panchayat in Salcete taluka has sought the intervention of Goa Police to stop travellers from violating the panchayat ban on visiting the Sarzora lake, which has been kept closed for visitors in view of the COVID-19 pandemic.
It has been resolved by the panchayat to keep the lake, belonging to the water resources department, closed till the pandemic is brought under control.
Sarpanch Sabita Mascarenhas said that accordingly, the panchayat has displayed a related notice at the side of the road leading to the lake. She said the panchayat had also requested the Cuncolim police to place barricades at the entry point. However, the request was turned down with the police claiming that all barricades were in use for ‘nakabandis’,
She said the villagers are concerned, as a large number of people from other areas including visitors from Maharashtra come to see the lake but park their vehicles in the village area and walk towards the lake. The sarpanch said the outsiders visiting the lake in large numbers could lead to community transmission in the village and surrounding areas and also make the visitors vulnerable to the deadly virus infection.
She said she will once again seek the intervention of police to stop the public from visiting the lake in view of the rising number of COVID-19 positive cases.
