One arrested in gold theft case

Mapusa: Acting on a complaint, the Mapusa police have arrested a resident of Thana,  Mumbai for allegedly committing theft of gold worth Rs 15 lakh from a local goldsmith.

The accused has been remanded to 10-day police custody.

Mapusa police, referring to the complaint filed by Nitin Jadhav, a goldsmith on November 9, stated that “around 9.15 pm after closing his shop, when the complainant was going home on his scooter, a car  followed him. Around four – five people in the car stopped him and informed that they are from Sawantwaddi crime branch and demanded documents. The accused also asked the complainant to open the dickey of his scooter, where they found 450 grams of melted gold, worth Rs 15 lakh. The accused took possession of the gold and left

the spot.”

In this connection, the Mapusa police registered offences under Section 34, 170, 379 read with Section 34 of the IPC against four – five unknown persons, and undertook investigation. 

The police informed that they got a reliable information about “the accused being in Mumbai and a team left for the place wherein one of the accused Satish Potdar (42) was arrested.”

The police said that they are searching for other accused involved in the crime.
