Konkani has been an official language of Goa for last 28 years but sadly the implementation of it has not been materialised at the government level. This was expressed by eminent writer and Sahitya Academy award winner Dilip Borkar. He was speaking as a chief guest during the ‘official language day celebration’ function organised by department of Konkani of MES College of Arts and Commerce, Zuarinagar. Principal, R B Patil, professor, Vasant Sail, vice principal and professor Satyawan Naik, head of Konkani department were also present on the dais.
“If Konkani is implemented in all walks of life in Goa then the problem of the sustenance of Konkani people will be easily taken care of. The government should use Konkani in its affairs which will make it easy to increase its reach to the common man,” said Borkar.
He further added, “Every Goan should know the importance of their mother tongue and the official language. Konkani became the official language of Goa after a long struggle. The supporters of Konkani language had to undergo strikes, lathi–charge, movements, processions and physical as well as mental assault, which ultimately resulted in the inclusion of Konkani as an official language.”
Today the Konkani speaking youth has become lethargic and is ignorant towards many social, political, economic and cultural issues, he is not ready to raise his voice against injustice in society and this leads us to introspect. He urged the Konkani youth to raise his voice against various issues facing the society.
Earlier principal R B Patil welcomed the gathering while professor Satyawan Naik introduced the guest. Nikhita Morjkar was the compere and professor Vasant Sail proposed the vote of thanks.
