Nuvem villagers condemn alleged family assault at stadium

ROQUE DIAS | NT

MARGAO: The villagers of Nuvem condemned the incident that occurred at the Fatorda stadium after FC Goa’s last match against Delhi Dynamos on Thursday where three spectators (family members from Anjuna) were allegedly brutally assaulted by the policemen in civil clothes, during the Gram Sabha on Sunday and demanded strict actions on the police involved in the incident, else appealed to Goans to boycott a forthcoming match in protest.

A family of three including a woman from north Goa, were allegedly beaten by the police who were manning the crowd while taking the selfie after the match. This is the first incident of its kind in the football history of Goa where spectators were beaten up for silly reasons. Alleged the members from Nuvem who attended the Gram Sabha.

A member of the gram sabha and a doctor who served as a medical attendant for football matches said, “I have done at least 500 matches at the Fatorda stadium as a medical attendant and witnessed over 30,000 crowd in one match, but never such incident had happened. It is a blot on  Goan football. What is the offence, just because they wanted to have a selfie, police assault them?”

“I appeal to the people of Goa to condemn it. How many police can be beaten up by two? Police has registered a false case against them. I demand that they check the CCTV footage,” suggested the doctor.

“This happened today to the Anjuna family, tomorrow same may happen to a family from Nuvem,” the doctor added.

The former sarpanch of Nuvem, Pausilipo Dourado said, Nuvem has many footballers and football has been the lifeline on many villagers. “We go with our families to watch matches. We took the resolution today during the gram sabha, to condemn the act because this should not repeat. Who were these people who were involved in the act? Are they the real police? Or the security personnel?”

“To assault a lady is very shameful thing. We wanted to know how a cop can assault a woman. There was no lady cop at that time. All people of Goa should demand action on those who assaulted the family. I also demanded the newly elected GFA president, Churchill Alemao to take the case up with the government and demand punishment to the man who touched the lady,” said Dourado.

The news of a Goan family assaulted went viral on social media and on WhatsApp. The condemning messages were circulated to clubs from

Goa.

The Nuvem Panchayat has decided to send the resolution copy to the Department of Sports and Youth Affairs for action.
