PANAJI: The entire central part of Panaji will become a pay parking zone from September 15 as the North Goa Collector Mihir Vardhan has notified 18 pay parking locations within the jurisdiction of Corporation of City of Panaji (CCP).
The CCP Mayor Surendra Furtado has now sought co-operation from the shopkeepers and storeowners in these locations in order to do away with the haphazard parking. Addressing a press conference on Monday, the CCP Mayor said that “we request the citizens to be with us wholeheartedly. Pay parking will ease the traffic movement at large as it is seen at the Patto Plaza.”
“Within a month’s time tender will be floated for awarding the contract of pay parking, and thermostat marking will be done after the monsoon” he added, pointing out that the pay parking fees would be the same as being charged at the EDC Complex.
The 18 locations which have been notified by the magistrate are: 18th June Road (from Governador Pestana Road to Cunha Rivera Road); Pandurang Pisurlekar (from A B Road to M G Road); Elvinna Britto Road-Church Square, lane between Cunha Reveira and Dr R S Road (between parks); Dr R S Road and Cunha Reveira Road (between Church Square and Messias Gomes Road), Messias Gomes Road (between Cunha Riveira and Dr R S Road); T B Cunha Road (between M G Road and 18th June road); Menezes Braganza Road (between Dr Pandurang Pissurlekar Road to T B Cunha Road); Antao de Noronha Road (between M G Road and T B Road near Café Bhosle); Dr Govind Vaidhya Road (between T B Cunha Road and Cunha Riveira Road); Bhonsle Square (between T B Cunha Road and Cunha Riveira Road); General Bernardo Guedes Road; Governador Pestana Road; Caetano de Albuquere Road; Dr Wolfango de Silva Road; Swami Vivekanand Road and Atmaram Borkar Road.
The Mayor said that in consultation with the CCP Commissioner, “residents will be accommodated and special passes will be introduced for traders.”
It may be noted that the CCP for the past many years generating revenue from pay parking at the KTC bus stand, St Monica Jetty and underground parking facility at the new municipal market.
Stressing on the need for multi-level parking facility, the Mayor stated that “I had been to Delhi and spoken to the Union Defense Minister Arun Jaitely about handing over the two military garages belonging to CCP to tackle the parking problem in Panaji. I have been considerably trying to convince Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar, who is also the Panaji MLA, to hand over the old Junta House godown and open spaces for converting them into multi-level parking.”
