Nitish Belurkar secures FM title


PANAJI: Goa’s chess player Nitish Belurkar achieved yet another milestone in his budding chess career when he was awarded the FIDE Master title by FIDE, the world chess governing body, on Wednesday.

Nitish, a Std IX student of Sharada Mandir School, Panaji who played in 2 international tournaments in Serbia was in very good form as he defeated 1 International Master, 1 FIDE Master and drew with 4 Grand Masters, 5 IMs, 1 WGM and 1 FM gaining a huge 126 rating points to cross the 2300 ELO rating mark. Nitish thus becomes only the third Goan and the youngest Goan player to achieve the FM title. Dronacharya awardee Raghunandan Gokhale who accompanied Nitish to Serbia was happy with Nitish performance.  “The IM title is next,” he prophesised.

President of Goa Chess Association Vinay Tendulkar, secretary Kishor Bandekar along with Ramdas Sawant, Mahesh Candolkar, Balkrishna V, and other office bearers of GCA congratulated Nitish on his achievement.

Nitish will next participate in the Al Ain Classic Chess Tournament to be held in UAE from December 22 to 31.
