Nisha Mohota emerges national women chess champion

PANAJI: IM Nisha Mohota of Petroleum Sports Promotion Board emerged winner in the 41st National Women Challengers Chess Championship 2014 held at Peddem Sports Complex, Mapusa on Monday.
Overnight joint leaders Nisha, former national women premier champion, and IM Subbaraman Vijayalakshmi of Air India were tied on 9.5 points after registering victories in their respective 11th round games against Neha Singh of Bihar and Lakshmi Praneetha of AP. The winner was then decided on tie break wherein Nisha managed to edge Vijayalakshmi due to better tie break and win the gold medal, while Vijayalakshmi had to be content with silver. Hinduja Reddy of AP claimed the bronze after finishing the tournament with 8.5 points. Nisha and Vijee remained unbeaten throughout the tournament.
Meanwhile, Goa’s last year’s national premier players WGM Bhakti Kulkarni and WIM Ivana Furtado qualified for Women National Premier Chess Championship after they won their respective final round games against WGM Swati Ghate of LIC and Smarki Mohanty of Odisha.
WFM Riya Savant finished on 16th position.

IM Nisha Mohota (9.5 points), IM Vijayalakshmi Subbaraman (9.5 points), Hinduja Reddy (8.5 points), WGM Pamini Raut (8 points), WGM Bhakti Kulkarni (8 points), WIM Ivana Furtado (8 points), Pratusha Bodda (8 points) and WGM Swati Ghate (7.5 points)
of LIC.
Tourism Minister Dilip Parulekar was the chief guest for the closing ceremony. Also present were Dilip Salgaocar, chairman of Geno Pharmaceuticals; Sandeep Falari, chairperson of Mapusa Municipal Council; Sudhanshu Jha, commissioner of Income Tax (Appeals); Yeshwant Tawade, DSYA director; Vinay Tendulkar, GCA president; Kishor Bandekar, AICF joint secretary and GCA secretary; Bruno Cutinho, SAG joint director and Ramdas Sawant, GCA treasurer.
