Navelim fight off Don Bosco scare to enter semis

Raia: Navelim Sporting entered the semifinals of 48th Custodio Memorial football tournament defeating Don Bosco Oratory, Fatorda 4-1 via the tie breaker played at panchayat grounds, Raia on Sunday.

The match started on a slow pace but as the proceedings wore on the teams began going strong with some attacking play.

Navelim’s attacking medio Aulon Gomes made two smart moves in the first fifteen minutes of play but he was denied from scoring after the alert Don Bosco Oratory defence led by Roque Borges cleared the ball to safety before Aulon could strike.

The Navelim striker who tried to deceive the rival defence with his quick footwork was at his best three minutes before half time when he unleashed a good shot from a difficult angle but somehow the Don Bosco Oratory keeper Swizel Pereira brought off a smart save.

Midway into the first session, Navelim Sporting’s overlapping defender Fr Americo Rodrigues had to be provided with medical attention after he sustained injury following his head hitting a railing of the gate at the side line.

It was after this incident that the defence of Navelim Sporting began to show signs of nervousness and panic which the Don Bosco Oratory team from Fatorda began to use to their advantage. But the Navelim defence stood bravely to foil all the moves that the Don Bosco Oratory team made with some brave defending as the match progressed.

Don Bosco Oratory’s Cliff Barreto and Joel Colaso began to attack the Navelim citadel working in complete tandem with each other and their quick moves posed a real threat to the Navelim goal.

Navelim Sporting thereafter tried to breach the rival fort with some moves initiated from both the flanks but an alert Don Bosco Oratory defender Roque Borges always made his presence felt to foil the Navelim team attack.

The second session too saw both teams going all out for the kill but the goal keepers at either end stood firm. As the teams were involved in a dead-lock, the tie breaker system had to be adopted to decide the winners in which Navelim Sporting proved to be the better shooters, scoring accurately through Clinton Niasso, Aulon Gomes, Danston Fernandes and Ronaldo Pereira.

Don Bosco Oratory, Fatorda could find the mark only through Velito Miranda.
